Hello everyone. My name is Sindi, and this is my son Caden Landry. Caden is from a small town in Nova Scotia Canada. When Caden was 14 his life changed in an instant when he was struck by an SUV while walking down the side of a road heading to the corner store for his favorite candy.
He was transported from the scene to the hospital where it was said he had a significant brain injury and was quickly intubated and was a 3 on the Glasgow Coma Scale. From there has was transported to the provincial Children's Hospital by Critical Care and it was said he would likely not survive the night and the only intervention that could be done was to insert a Intracranial Monitor to track his ICP which was high.
His brain injury was a diffuse axonal injury to the the brain stem plus two bleeds. He also suffered significant damage to his lungs, broken ribs and fractured vertebrae.
He thankfully survived that evening but remained in a coma. After not responding even after extubation it was said he would not be the same boy that left that evening to go to the store, that he would need a trach, a gtube and need lifelong care.
Amazingly Caden has recovered very well. He didn't need any of those interventions. He was moved out of the ICU two weeks after the incident and moved to the regular ward where he worked with the rehab team to gain his strength back and work on balance to get him walking again.
It's been two years, he's just finishing up 11th grade. Thankfully he has no memory of that evening or even his hospital stay. He is forever changed, and has some lingering issues that we are working on, but he's an absolute super hero!
Thank you TBI One Love for all you do and bringing us Survivors and Caregivers together to share with those touched by a brain injury there is hope!
