TBI One Love Survivor Courtney Allen

October 13,2014    the date of the accident

I was being driven to Houston for a job interview.

I was excited that I might get to work with my best friend Kirk Owens.

I remember driving over to his house that morning.

Kirk was going to drive us to Houston to meet his manager.

It was a rainy morning.

I got in the car with Kirk

I wish I had a recording of our conversation…Kirk’s last conversation!

According to the Department of Public Safety, we hydroplaned across the road, then an 18 wheeler hit us on my side!  Kirk did not survive the crash.  According to my mom and the medical records, I was transported from the scene of the accident to Conroe Regional Hospital.  After exploratory surgery it was determined that I had a severe traumatic brain injury, liver laceration, aortic dissection, crushed pelvis, crushed ribs, collapsed lungs, etc...  I was then life-flighted to Memorial Hermann in Houston where I remained for 41 days.  Since leaving Hermann, I have been in several rehab facilities, including TIRR, Houston, and TLC in Galveston.

While at TIRR, the my first memory after the wreck was my son Wade.

He was sitting on the edge of the bed watching TV.

I tapped his leg with my foot.

He put my foot in the middle of the bed.

I slid my foot back and kicked his butt!

He stopped watching TV long enough to stand put his hands on his hips.

He said “now dad, what are they going to say to you in prison when they know you kicked your son?”

I laughed he ran up to me and hugged me.

He said let me go get Noni

I said no because I didn’t want to pass back out

He and I had a great conversation.

I thank God for the many blessings he has provided.
