Hello everyone! My name is Leah Chyma.
I am an artist, nature lover, health enthusiast, yogi and traumatic brain injury survivor.
On, August 7th, 2018 at 30 years old, I was leaving dinner with a few friends and we decided to take those motorized scooters home for my first and only time. Days later I awoke in the shock trauma unit unable to move due to the machines & measures taken to keep me alive. Apparently I was involved in a single person, freak accident on the scooter and when I fell I landed in a way where my hands absorbed nothing so my head took the brunt of the impact.
I was diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury, three skulls fractures, three brain bleeds & post traumatic stress disorder. There was a time my heart rate dipped to 30BPM and the doctors were not sure I was going to pull through. However, after three weeks in the hospital I was released into the world with a continuous ponding headache, limited life skills BUT a second chance at life.
I see my accident as the wake up call I needed to find meaning in what I experienced and I truly believe I was given a second chance at life to help other people extend their time here. Months into my recovery, and let me tell you years later I am still recovering and really think I always will be, I started envisioning a way to combine my art and passion for helping others. In March of 2020 Knockin’ Noggins was born. Knockin’ Noggins is my custom helmet company changing how the world sees helmets through education, awareness and badass custom design. We create helmets that people actually get excited to wear while education the masses on why it’s worth wearing a small piece of plastic each time you ride.
For every 10 helmets made, one is donated to a child in need of badass protection. I believe my brain injury flipped my perspective on my life path and I am truly grateful to be here to share my story.
